CHARACTER NAME: Soranik Natu
SERIES: DCU | Green Lantern
CHRONOLOGY: Green Lantern Corps #38
CLASS: Hero
BACKGROUND:
Out in space, in the center of the known DC universe, is a planet called Oa. The homeworld of the Guardians, it's also the homeworld of the Green Lantern Corps - an interstellar police force equipped with rings called 'power rings'. The universe - divided into 3600 sectors, has two lanterns per sector with the focal point of all sectors being Oa. When a lantern dies, their ring seeks out a replacement within their sector - seeking out people who have the ability to overcome fear.
Born on Korugar in sector 1417 to Arin Sur and Thaal Sinestro, Soranik didn't want for anything. She had two loving parents and a bright future ahead of her - the daughter of one of the greatest Green Lanterns and the niece of another. But whatever idyllic childhood she had was quickly shattered - Sinestro's quest for order led him to use his ring against his own people, becoming a dictator. Arin Sur, out of fear and desperation, left Sora in the care of the Natus for them to raise as their own.
Years passed and Soranik grew up with no knowledge of her true heritage. Sinestro's abuse of his ring and power was eventually discovered and while he himself was stripped of his ring and banished into a different universe, the scars of his rule remained. The Green Lantern Corps were forever despised on Korugar - even the work of Katma Tui (the next lantern from Korugar and the leader of the resistance against Sintestro) did nothing to change the image of the Corps as a symbol of tyranny.
Soranik Natu became the best neurosurgeon on Korugar, and it's during a difficult medical procedure that Sinestro's old power ring comes for her. Denying it at first, she eventually accepts it when she realizes using it is the only way to save the life of her patient. Thing rapidly escalate from there - after an attempt to resign from the corps, she's goaded into sticking it out by a fellow Lantern. Korugar, in response, turns its back on its best surgeon and Soranik burns her old things, declaring that it has murdered her.
It's an exaggeration. After saving the life of someone in the lower classes of Korugar, her reputation as a good person, as a savior who can help her planet, grows. People start looking towards her to lead them - and when Sinestro (now founder of his own power ring group - the Sinestro Corps - fueled on fear) takes a break from trying to take over the center of the multiverse (Earth), he pays his old planet a visit. It ends with Soranik losing but the citizens of Korugar thinking she's won - but only after Sinestro has taunted her with her fear that she'll turn out like him. He figures she'll stay on Korugar - out of the fight and to keep 'his' planet safe.
She doesn't. It's a terrible first start to their relationship.
More things happen with the Corps, but the biggest two developments is the naming of Iolande as Soranik's sector partner after her current one dies and a Star Sapphire's (a different ring corps fueled on loveeeeeeee) revelation that Green Lantern honor guard member Kyle Rayner is Soranik's true love thanks to a magical love crystal. As the Guardians recently decided that a relationship between two members of the Corps was against the rules, they start up a relationship but keep it on the down low.
Of course, just when things are looking up for Sora, they go terribly wrong. She and Iolande are dispatched to Korugar to explain why Sinestro won't be brought to them for execution when the man himself shows up - and in a private tussle, reveals the fact that SORANIK, I AM YOUR FATHER. Also the triangles under her eyes were something he burned into her skin when she was like ten, with added tracking device. Not creepy at all Sinestro, good job. A+ parenting. He leaves, telling her that she's done much to put Korugar on the path that he wanted for it and that he's proud of her.
Soranik comes into the City right after her chat with Iolande about Sinestro.
PERSONALITY:
Headstrong, with a low tolerance for bullshit, and something of a temper coupled with a fair amount arrogance, Soranik hardly comes across as woman who'd pick something like medicine as a career choice. But above all else - her duty to the corps, her DNA - she wants to heal people. Her world has seen too much, been torn apart too often, and being a doctor was a way to go about helping mend her planet. Her service in the Green Lantern Corps is simply an extension of that - she swears to use that power for good rather than ill - to show the people of her world that the Corps are not all that bad.
Her dedication and determination to her jobs along with her defining traits leads her to be standoffish and distant to most, except to her patients. She smiles more, and seems to relax around them once her job's done. Being a surgeon, being a Green Lantern, and helping those around her truly does make her life a better place. That doesn't leave much time for relaxation or even a relationship - considering that it is her life, but it's a sign of how secure she feels in her job as a Green Lantern and a surgeon that she's beginning to try and make time.
It should also be mentioned that appealing to her arrogance or dedication is the best way to get her to change her mind about doing something. She can't resist proving people wrong - it's why she agreed to continue training to be a Green Lantern despite her fears and the belief that her power ring was cursed. By doing good with the ring, she can prove her entire planet wrong and save them.
But even though she seems like a woman who has everything together, she's inwardly trying to deal with the hand life has dealt her. Her people, once so against the Green Lanterns, have come to see Soranik as a savior, a leader - and she wants none of it. And yet Sinestro, the man who ruined their planet, hangs above her taunting her with the success of bringing the people together under the banner of the Lantern Corps, just like he did.
Her fears - of failure, of becoming like Sinestro - are only doubled once her true heritage is brought to light. She's a doctor, a healer, not a ruler like Sinestro. But what if her DNA, her power ring (that was once his) will out and she finds herself like him? He's also done a number on her by telling her he's proud of her - as if it should matter to the daughter he never raised. The fear of turning into Sinestro, or someone that he would approve of (more than he already apparently does), is a constant fear, but one Soranik has to overcome every day to continue to be a Green Lantern.
Soranik believes in justice, in the hope that there might be a brighter future for both her and her planet. While only recently acting upon this belief, it can be assumed that it was always there - she simply had no way to enforce it as a mere surgeon. But as a Green Lantern Soranik has that ability to see that justice is served. And while she may not always agree with the way it has to go down, she'll do it in the end because she knows if she doesn't, everything will fall apart and cease to have meaning.
While her opinions on the Guardians is never discussed, it can be assumed that she generally has no trouble with their rules. And when she does break them, she doesn't make a big show of it - the desire to keep her job high. Her ability to break them most likely stems from the combination of her own arrogance that she won't get caught or that love is worth the risk. She is shown to be much happier later when the ban on two lanterns engaging in a relationship is lifted; preferring to not hide or be underhanded in dealings if she can help it.
Soranik, while inwardly battling her own doubts and fears, finds confidence in her abilities to bring justice to the universe and her ability to heal those around her. Her attitude and demeanor may not make her overly likable to those around her, but she will always want the best for everyone. Always working hard on whatever her task might be, she's dependable and competent when it comes down to the wire.
POWER:
+ power ring & battery;
"The most powerful weapon in the universe" - fueled by the willpower. Capable of creating constructs out of solid light and is only limited by the wearer's imagination and willpower. Automatically creates a force field around the user that allows for flight (and travel through hyperspace) as well as survival in otherwise impossible places. Also has a failsafe that, in the event of a fatal attack on an unsuspecting bearer, will automatically prevent said attack from killing. Acts as a universal translator, can do scans for energy/what have you, and so on and so forth - it's like a handy, portable mini-computer. But the ring must be charged from the battery every so often or risk losing all charge and power and rendering the user helpless.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
[ It's very hard to mistake Soranik for anyone who's been in the City for any length of time - even ignoring the red skin. Her outline glows a bright green and the background of the feed is clearly space - stars and all. She looks like she's been cheated out of a good night's sleep or at least a few hours of rest. ]
My name is Doctor Soranik Natu, Green Lantern of Sector 1417. If those words are familiar to anyone in the City - I want to speak with you.
[ There's a moment where she rubs her temples - the past few hours have been exhausting, to say the least. ]
I don't have time for this, but it doesn't take a lot to guess everyone who arrives here shares the sentiment at the beginning. So if I'm going to be stuck here, I'm going to need a job. I'm a highly accomplished neurosurgeon on my home world, but general medicine will suffice for now. Regrettably, references will be impossible to produce, but given a chance I will more than sufficiently prove my skill.
[ There's one more thing to be addressed, however. ]
And whoever drew this [ Panning the video feed showing the giant dick drawn on the surface of the moon. It's new to her, and also hard to ignore if you're floating around in space. ] I'm sure you've already been congratulated on clever you are.
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
The first thing Soranik did upon her arrival was, once she'd stepped outside, to take off into space. There wasn't time to waste on Earth, and she didn't belong there, let alone in that sector. With four lanterns from that planet alone, she truly doubted they'd need another one any time soon.
Error. Cannot determine location of Oa.
That stopped her in her tracks - dropping out of hyperspace to stare at her ring. A malfunction? Cursed, she thought, before Soranik dismissed it out of hand. No. No, that was Sinestro, and Sinestro alone. Focus.
"Korugar?"
Error. Cannot determine location of Korugar.
Cursing inwardly, Sora tried the next most likely request. "Run a scan for any power rings in this sector." Not that she knew Lanterns Stewart and Jordan personally, but they were Corps. They were trustworthy and dependable.
Negative. No power rings detected.
"Damn it!" It wasn't possible. Except that, against all odds, it was.
Alright, time to regroup and reconsider her options. She'd grabbed whatever it was recommended for her to take at the Porter - perhaps they'd have some answers in the brochures. Or, failing that, whatever the device was supposed to connect to - a network, wasn't it? Retreating back somewhere halfway between the Earth and its moon, Soranik busied herself with flipping through the pamphlets. Better to go in armed with knowledge than to blunder about with none at all.
